Excerpt from Patanjali Yoga Sutras (English PDF)
To delve into the practice of Yoga, it is crucial to understand two fundamental concepts: Chitta and Vritti, as explained in the Patanjali Yoga Sutras. Chitta refers to the mind material, while Vritti refers to the disturbances that arise within the mind. Swami Vivekananda uses the example of a lake to illustrate these concepts, where Chitta is compared to the bottom of the lake, and Vritti to the ripples on the surface.
As we progress in the practice of Yoga, we must purify ourselves and strive to control the different emotions and feelings that arise within us. For instance, anger and impatience can be classified as Vrittis that disturb the mind. While reasoning is considered a subtle form of Vritti, Yogis eventually give it up as they attain a deeper understanding of the truth.
Swami Vivekananda suggests meditating on a lotus, which can be helpful in the initial stages of Yoga, but it is important to give up imagination as well. Muni Patanjali defines imagination as a form of Vritti, and it is essential to eliminate all disturbances within the mind to attain self-realization.
While reasoning is the beginning of the journey towards the truth, there comes a phase in Yoga where reasoning is no longer necessary. The truth becomes apparent, and Yogis can perceive it without having to reason with themselves continually. This understanding is in line with the teachings of Muni Patanjali, who also considers reasoning a form of Vritti.
